During a cold winter in 2012/2013, I took the opportunity to wrap up and head off with microphones and field recorder, in to the cold with the aim to record some frozen moments.

1) FROZEN WATER 26:27
A cold January night in North Norfolk, the temperature dropped below freezing and once again the snow was falling and settling.
Two hydrophones about an inch below the snows surface, plus at the same time a pair of small omni microphones to capture the atmosphere above.
Light snow falling with light but occasionally strong gusts of wind. Hydrophone channels fade in; the snow shower becomes heavy before eventually easing off and moving on.
Recorded Sunday 19th January 2013 from midnight onwards.

2)FROZEN LAKE 40:33
The13th of December 2012 beside the lake at Felbrigg Hall was my second attempt to record the Ice here. On the first attempt, the ice was too thin. However as I reached the lake on the this occasion just before 6am, my excitement grew as I noticed most of the lake had frozen over but for a very small circle of water where gulls, swans and ducks were standing around the icy edge. I slid the hydrophones out on to the ice on the opposite side of the lake. After a little while, the hydrophones bonded in to the ice. The waterfowl footsteps, and the downdraft from their wings at take off helped produce these sounds from the ice, as well as the movement of air bubbles and changes in the ice from temperature etc. Slowly melting during the day and re-freezing at sun set.
